Joondalup #180 Free
A three-stage route from Joondalup Driver Assessment Centre, covering 10.1 km in about 21 minutes through Joondalup and Currambine. With 29 turns (16 left, 13 right), this is one of the most turn-heavy routes from this centre. Speed limits range from 50 to 70 km/h, with the route moving between residential crescents and Shenton Avenue at 70 km/h.
Watch Out For
- 29 turns in 10 km. You will be turning roughly every 500 metres. Check mirrors and signal well before each turn.
- Davidson Terrace to Shenton Avenue (70 km/h). Speed increases on these main roads. Reach the limit promptly.
- Tanglewood Way/La Grange Loop area. Quiet residential crescents at 50 km/h. Narrow roads with parked cars on bends — check for oncoming traffic before passing.
- 3 roundabouts. In WA, signal when entering (left for left, right for right). Signal left when exiting.
- Speed limit traps. Roads like Blue Mountain Dr and Silkeborg Crescent look wide but have no speed signs — default 50 km/h applies. Never judge speed by road width.
- Hilly terrain. Brake on downhills to avoid creeping over the limit. Apply throttle on uphills to maintain momentum. Poor speed management on slopes is a common fail point.
- Speed transitions. Do not accelerate until you have passed the 70 km/h sign. Start slowing down before you reach the 50 km/h sign.
- Concealed driveways. Hidden driveways throughout the residential sections. Do not block them when stopping or performing manoeuvres.
- Aggressive drivers near L plates. Some drivers become impatient around learner vehicles. Stay calm, maintain your speed, and do not rush decisions.
Route Features
- 16 left turns, 13 right turns, 3 roundabouts, 5 sets of traffic lights.
- 3 roundabouts.
- 5 sets of traffic signals.
- Speed range: 50-70 km/h.
- 3 stages, the most common format for Joondalup routes.
- Main roads: Candlewood Boulevard, Shenton Avenue, Grand Boulevard.
- Grand Boulevard lane changes with fast-moving traffic on this dual carriageway. Confident mirror checks and signalling required.
- Right turn at lights without arrow on Shenton Avenue. Wait for a gap in oncoming traffic before turning.
- Dual carriageway T-junctions. Give way to traffic from both directions. Final check should be to the left (nearest threat).
- Unmarked roads in built-up areas default to 50 km/h.
- Candlewood Shopping Centre area. Parked cars and pedestrians common. Reduce speed to 20-30 km/h and scan constantly.
Test Manoeuvres
- Kerbside stop near Moondarra Way area. On Silkeborg Crescent, avoid stopping near blind bends, driveways, or intersections. Pull over within 30 cm of the kerb.
- Reverse bay parking at Candlewood Village Shopping Centre. Reverse into a parking bay using mirrors and blind spot checks. Straighten within the lines.
- "Left Something Behind" (3-point turn) in residential streets such as Silkeborg Crescent. Use a driveway or side street to reverse direction safely.
- Licensing Centre exit. You must indicate LEFT when leaving the centre, even though it feels like driving straight. The stop sign requires a complete stop — check for pedestrians before proceeding.
Key Tips
- With 29 turns, this route tests your ability to plan ahead. Look for turn signs early and position yourself in the correct lane well in advance.
- The residential crescents near La Grange Loop have blind corners. Slow down and stay left.
- Compared to Route #168 (16 turns), this route demands more frequent direction changes.
- Tanglewood Way narrow streets. Stay centred in your lane and watch for vehicles emerging from side streets.
- Default 50 km/h tip: Drive 46-49 km/h on unmarked residential roads to avoid accidentally exceeding the limit.
