Joondalup #181 Pro
A three-stage route from Joondalup Driver Assessment Centre, covering 11.7 km in about 24 minutes through Joondalup and Currambine. This route has 6 roundabouts and 28 turns (15 left, 13 right), combining frequent direction changes with roundabout navigation. Speed limits range from 50 to 70 km/h.
Watch Out For
- 6 roundabouts. The highest roundabout count among the medium-length Joondalup routes. Signal on entry in WA (left for left, right for right), signal left when exiting.
- Grand Boulevard (70 km/h). Main arterial road. Maintain the speed limit.
- Jolstra Crescent area. Residential crescent with limited visibility around bends. Keep left and slow down.
- 28 turns total. Frequent direction changes require constant mirror checks and early signalling.
- Vision obstructions near Joondalup Service Centre. Parked cars block your view at residential intersections. Creep forward slowly until you can see clearly.
- Shared driveways in residential areas. Some front yards are paved the same as driveways, making it hard to tell them apart. Scan carefully before crossing.
- Faded road markings on right-hand turns. Watch for worn lane markings and position yourself correctly even when lines are hard to see.
- Merging lanes after traffic lights. The left lane runs out and merges into the right after some Joondalup intersections. Check mirrors and merge early.
- Buses stopping on the road. Joondalup has no dedicated bus bays in some areas. Be ready to wait or safely change lanes.
- High pedestrian activity near Joondalup CBD. Scan footpaths and crossings constantly, especially near shops.
- Cyclists on bike lanes. Check your left blind spot before turning left across a bike lane.
- Parked car doors. Maintain at least 1.5 m margin from parked vehicles to avoid being hit by opening doors.
Route Features
- 15 left turns, 13 right turns, 6 roundabouts, 5 sets of traffic lights.
- 6 roundabouts.
- 5 sets of traffic signals.
- Speed range: 50-70 km/h. Default 50 km/h in residential streets, 70 km/h on arterials like More Drive and Joondalup Drive (look for "double signs" confirming the limit).
- School zones: 40 km/h (7:30-9:00 AM and 2:30-4:00 PM).
- Main roads: Christchurch Terrace, Grand Boulevard, Blue Mountain Drive.
- Two-lane roundabouts require strict lane discipline: maintain your lane throughout the roundabout, do not "straight-line" across lanes.
- Traffic light left turns (slip lanes) require checking two sources of traffic before proceeding.
Test Manoeuvres
- Kerbside stop near La Grange Loop area. Do not block any driveway, and stay at least 1 m from fire hydrants (look for the white 'H' painted on the road).
- "Left Something Behind" (turn-around exercise). Drive away from the stop, then return using a side street turn or U-turn.
- Reverse bay parking at a local car park or at the Service Centre.
- Hill parking. Turn your wheels half a turn toward the kerb when parking on a hill.
Key Tips
- With 6 roundabouts and 28 turns, this route keeps you busy. Maintain consistent roundabout technique throughout.
- The Lakeside Drive section transitions to Shenton Avenue. Watch for the speed limit change.
- Compared to Route #231 (15 roundabouts, 25.7 km), this route is shorter but still roundabout-heavy for its length.
- Stop signs: You must come to a complete stop and feel the car "rock back" before proceeding. Rolling stops will fail you.
- Hill descents: Use light braking on downhill sections to prevent creeping over the speed limit.
- Speed awareness: Residential areas default to 50 km/h, arterials to 70 km/h. Always confirm with posted signs.
