Joondalup #182 Pro
A two-stage route from Joondalup Driver Assessment Centre, covering 13 km in about 23 minutes through Joondalup, Currambine, and Kinross. This is one of only two Joondalup routes that reach 100 km/h (along with Route #231), with a brief section on Burns Beach Road. The route includes a Mitchell Freeway merge segment, the "Left Something Behind" exercise, forward bay parking at a shopping centre, and reverse bay parking back at the Licensing Centre. 6 roundabouts and balanced turns (8 left, 8 right).
Watch Out For
- Burns Beach Road (100 km/h). The speed jumps from 70 to 100 km/h. You must reach close to the limit. This is the fastest section of any Joondalup route besides #231.
- Freeway merge point. Indicate early, check blind spots, and reach 100 km/h on the merge ramp. Hesitation or under-speed merging is a critical error.
- Speed transitions from 50 to 100 km/h. The route covers 50→70→100→70 km/h plus school zones at 40 km/h. Watch for every speed sign carefully.
- Dual carriageway speed illusion. Some divided roads look like 60-70 km/h zones but are actually 50 km/h. Always check the posted signs.
- Service Centre exit at Boas Ave. Complex stop sign intersection. Use the whole road surface and check thoroughly before proceeding.
- 6 roundabouts. In WA, signal when entering. Signal left when exiting. Two-lane roundabouts: stick to your lane and indicate off.
- Shenton Avenue (70 km/h). After the 100 km/h section, you must slow back down to 70 on Shenton Avenue.
- Broadmoor Green area. Residential streets at 50 km/h. Significant deceleration needed after higher speed roads.
- Turning left at traffic lights across solid white lines. You may need to cross a solid white line to enter a left-turn lane. This is allowed when entering a turning lane.
- Cyclists, pedestrians, and erratic drivers. Stay alert for vulnerable road users, especially near shopping areas and schools.
- Emergency vehicles. Pull over to the left and stop when you hear sirens. Resume only when safe.
Route Features
- 13 left turns, 9 right turns, 6 roundabouts, 6 sets of traffic lights.
- 6 roundabouts.
- 6 sets of traffic signals.
- Speed range: 50-100 km/h. One of the widest speed ranges in Joondalup (50→70→100→70, plus school zones at 40).
- Main roads: Burns Beach Road, Shenton Avenue, Grand Boulevard.
- Mitchell Freeway section for high-speed merge and exit practice.
- Stop sign at Boas Ave / Service Centre exit: a key intersection where full stops are assessed.
Test Manoeuvres
- Kerbside stop near Christchurch Terrace area (hill start context near Windermere Reserve). Turn steering half a turn toward the kerb when parking on a hill.
- "Left Something Behind" (turn-around exercise). Choose a safe driveway for a three-point turn or use a U-turn in a side street. Use a double-width driveway if available and do not reverse past the letterbox. For U-turns, take a semicircular path and change your indicator to left before re-entering the main road. Missing opportunities (passing suitable driveways) can be marked against you.
- Reverse bay parking at a shopping centre. Use the "three-line method" to guide your positioning. You can correct if you end up crooked.
- Forward bay parking at the Licensing Centre. Go wide to the right to swing into a left-hand bay cleanly.
Key Tips
- The 100 km/h section on Burns Beach Road is short. Accelerate smoothly but do not panic if you cannot reach exactly 100 before the zone ends.
- This route requires managing 4 different speed zones (50, 70, 100, plus 40 in school zones). Keep your eyes on speed signs.
- The balanced 8/8 turn split means you will turn equally in both directions. Stay centred in your lane through each turn.
- At the freeway merge, match the traffic speed before entering. Check mirrors and blind spot at least twice.
- When doing the "Left Something Behind" exercise, act decisively. Drive past, find a safe turnaround point promptly, and return. The assessor is watching your planning and observation, not just the manoeuvre itself.
- For the stop sign at Boas Ave, come to a complete stop, check both directions thoroughly, and proceed only when fully clear.
