Joondalup #183 Pro
A three-stage route from Joondalup Driver Assessment Centre, covering 10.7 km in about 23 minutes through Joondalup and Currambine. This route has the most extreme left-turn bias of any Joondalup route, with 18 left turns versus only 12 right turns. The route includes 5 roundabouts and reaches 70 km/h on Grand Boulevard and Connolly Drive.
Watch Out For
- 18 left turns. The most left-turn-heavy Joondalup route. In WA (left-hand traffic), left turns are into the nearest lane. Stay tight to the left kerb.
- Connolly Drive (70 km/h). Western section of the route at higher speed. Watch for the speed change when leaving residential areas.
- Meadowbrook Promenade. Residential area near Connolly Drive. Speed drops from 70 to 50 km/h.
- 5 roundabouts. Signal right on approach if turning right, signal left when exiting after passing the exit before yours.
- Queensbury Road area. Residential streets with 50 km/h limit.
- Service Centre exit. The stop sign requires a complete stop — you must feel the car "rock back" before proceeding. Check for pedestrians.
- "Suicide Alley" near the centre. A narrow section with high pedestrian activity and phone-distracted walkers. Reduce speed to 30-35 km/h and scan constantly.
- Bike lane crossings. Check your blind spot before crossing a bike lane when turning left. Cyclists can appear quickly.
- Hidden stop sign. One stop sign is mounted on the right-hand side and easily missed. Rely on the white stop line painted on the road.
- Blind spots at merges. Many roads merge without clear signage. Check mirrors and blind spots before merging.
- Pedestrians and e-scooters near Joondalup city centre. Stay alert in shared traffic zones.
Route Features
- 18 left turns, 12 right turns, 5 roundabouts, 5 sets of traffic lights.
- 5 roundabouts.
- 5 sets of traffic signals.
- Speed range: 50-70 km/h.
- Main roads: Grand Boulevard, Connolly Drive, Davidson Terrace.
- Joondalup Dr / Grand Blvd intersection. No dedicated turning arrows. Move out one car length into the intersection and wait for a safe gap.
- T-junctions to main roads (70 km/h zones). Check both ways. Use the median strip to wait if needed.
- School zones. Watch for painted (non-electronic) school zone signs. Locate the end-of-zone sign before accelerating back to the normal limit.
- Car parks. Drive at "fast walking pace" — approximately 10 km/h.
Test Manoeuvres
- Kerbside stop near Candlewood Boulevard area. If on a hill, turn wheels half a turn toward the kerb. Stop between two driveways, not across them.
- Forward and reverse bay parking in a shopping centre car park. Stay central in the bay and use mirrors throughout.
- "Left Something Behind" exercise. Use side streets like Borlos Court or La Grange Loop to turn around. Perform safely and signal clearly.
Key Tips
- With 18 left turns, practise smooth left-turn technique. Check left mirror, signal early, turn into the nearest lane.
- The western section via Connolly Drive is different from most Joondalup routes which stay east. Be familiar with this area.
- 30 total turns in 10.7 km means a turn roughly every 450 metres. Stay focused and plan ahead.
- Default 50 km/h: Drive 46-49 km/h on unmarked residential roads to avoid accidentally exceeding the limit.
- Main roads 70 km/h: If unsure whether the limit is 70, stay at 50 and calmly inform the assessor you are uncertain.
- Parked cars on narrow residential streets. Check mirrors and blind spots before passing. Maintain safe clearance.
