Joondalup #184 Pro
A three-stage route from Joondalup Driver Assessment Centre, covering 9.8 km in about 23 minutes entirely within Joondalup. This route stands out for having the most traffic signals of any Joondalup route at 11, concentrated along Joondalup Drive and Grand Boulevard. The route also heads south into the Honeybush Drive area, which most other Joondalup routes do not cover.
Watch Out For
- 11 traffic signals. The highest signal count at Joondalup. Stay alert for yellow lights and maintain a safe following distance in case you need to stop suddenly.
- Joondalup Drive (70 km/h). A busy road with multiple signalised intersections. Maintain the speed limit and watch for vehicles turning across your path.
- Honeybush Drive/Sundew Rise area. Southern section at 50 km/h. Quiet residential streets with parked cars.
- 5 roundabouts. Signal on entry (WA rule), signal left when exiting. Winton Road roundabouts require careful signalling and checking traffic from the right.
- 29 turns (14 left, 15 right). Slightly right-turn dominant. Right turns across oncoming traffic need careful gap selection.
- Bunnings crosswalks. Pedestrians step out from behind large parked SUVs near Bunnings Edgewater — a common fail point. Slow down and scan constantly in the car park.
- Grand Boulevard and Shenton Ave right turn. Green light may not have an arrow. You must give way to oncoming traffic before turning.
- One-way street transition near start. All surfaces — bitumen, concrete, and brick — are part of the road. Do not drive on what appears to be a footpath.
- Unusual 60 km/h zone on an industrial side street. Most surrounding roads are 50 km/h, so this is easy to miss.
- Grand Boulevard lane reduction. One section reduces to one lane each direction. Watch for merge signs and check your blind spot.
- Buses on Grand Boulevard. You must give way to buses re-entering traffic when their indicator is on. Failing to do so is a common immediate failure.
- Traffic light safety. When you are first at green, do a visual right-and-left check for red-light runners before proceeding.
Route Features
- 14 left turns, 15 right turns, 5 roundabouts, 11 sets of traffic lights.
- 5 roundabouts.
- 11 sets of traffic signals. Most of any Joondalup route.
- Speed range: 50-70 km/h, with one unusual 60 km/h industrial section.
- Main roads: Joondalup Drive, Grand Boulevard, Winton Road.
- 70 km/h to 50 km/h transitions approaching town centre. Begin slowing before the sign.
- Default 50 km/h. Downhill stretches on Grand Boulevard cause the car to creep over the limit. Use engine braking.
- "Double Bar" instruction. A right turn at lights followed immediately by a left into a side street. Requires quick lane positioning and signalling.
- "Two lanes become one" merge point before a right-hand turning bay. Check blind spot before merging.
Test Manoeuvres
- Kerbside stop near Winton Road area on a wide industrial street. Check for yellow "No Stopping" lines before pulling over.
- Reverse bay parking at Bunnings Edgewater car park. High traffic area — use your indicator early to signal your intention and deter following cars.
- "Left Something Behind" turnaround. You must turn around twice to return to the original direction. Use driveways or side streets. May include a driveway reverse as part of the exercise.
- Three-point turn / U-turn depending on road width and traffic conditions.
Key Tips
- With 11 signals, this route tests your traffic light awareness more than other Joondalup routes. Do not rush through late yellow lights.
- The southern section near Sundew Rise is unique to this route. Familiarise yourself with these streets.
- Compared to Route #168 (4 signals) or #180 (5 signals), this route has over twice the signal count.
- Parked vehicles on narrow streets. Maintain at least 1.5 m clearance when passing. Check mirrors and blind spots.
- Pedestrians at turns. Give way to pedestrians even without a marked crossing. This applies at every turn.
- Default 50 km/h tip: Drive 46-49 km/h on unmarked residential roads to avoid accidentally exceeding the limit.
