Route 1978 runs 8.6 miles in about 28 minutes as a single stage, working north towards Acomb and back through Hexham. Limits range from 20 to 70 mph. Its 11 right turns are more than any other route at this test centre, while just three sets of traffic lights make it the least signal controlled drive of the eleven here.
