Route 1979 covers 9.7 miles in about 30 minutes as one stage, running out to Anick and returning through the west of Hexham. Limits range from 20 to 70 mph. It has only four left and four right turns, among the fewest at this test centre, but five roundabouts and six sets of traffic lights fill the gaps between them.

Watch Out For

  • Five roundabouts spread across the loop, each needing a give way to the right.
  • Six sets of traffic lights, some close enough to queue between.
  • Maiden's Walk and the residential streets, where forward vision is short.
  • Westbourne Grove, narrow and lined with parked cars.
