Winchester #339 Pro
At just 6 miles and 25.5 minutes, this is the shortest and simplest of Winchester's 6 routes. It stays within the city through West Hill, Fulflood, Hyde, Abbotts Barton and Weeke, with speeds between 20 and 40 mph. With only 1 roundabout and 5 traffic signals, it focuses heavily on residential driving skills, junctions and speed awareness in built-up areas.
Watch Out For
- School zone near Hyde. One of 3 school zones on this route. Drop to 20 mph and scan for children, especially during morning and afternoon hours.
- Stoke Road junctions. Residential area with multiple give way junctions in quick succession. Full observation at each one is essential.
- Stop sign at West Hill. Complete stop required. This junction appears on most Winchester routes, so practise it well.
- Clifton Hill. Steep gradient with parked cars. Hill starts and meeting traffic on narrow sections are common challenges here.
Route Features
- 9 left turns, 11 right turns, 1 roundabout, 5 sets of traffic lights.
- 20 turns (9 left, 11 right), 1 roundabout, 5 traffic signals
- Speed range from 20 to 40 mph, entirely within Winchester city
- Key roads include Saint James Lane, Stoke Road, Upper High Street, Worthy Lane, Courtenay Road and Clifton Hill
- 3 school zones, 6 give way junctions, 3 pedestrian crossings
Test Manoeuvres
- Pull up on the left near the test centre. Check mirrors, signal left, and position close to the kerb.
Key Tips
- Short route does not mean easy. The residential focus means constant speed changes and more junctions per mile.
- With 6 give way points, show clear observation at every junction. A quick glance is not enough.
- On Clifton Hill, use the handbrake for hill starts if needed. Rolling back is a serious fault.
