Tolworth (London) #420 Free
This 8.2-mile, 37.6-minute route is the most technically demanding of all 6 Tolworth test routes, featuring a remarkable 9 roundabouts. Combined with 22 traffic signals, 24 turns, and 4 stop signs, it requires near-constant decision-making. The route loops through Tolworth and Surbiton, staying predominantly at 20 mph (516 data points) through residential streets around Surbiton Hill Park and Grand Avenue.
Watch Out For
- Upper Brighton Road roundabout. First of 9 roundabouts. Set the standard early: give way to the right, signal on entry, signal left when exiting.
- Stop sign on Hollyfield Road. Full stop required. This junction appears on multiple Tolworth routes and is a known fail point.
- Stop sign near King Charles’ Road. Limited forward visibility. Stop completely, then creep forward to observe.
- Elmbridge Avenue roundabout. Residential roundabout with limited signage. Watch for vehicles approaching from side streets without stopping.
- Beresford Avenue. Narrow road with parked cars. Give way situations arise frequently. Check mirrors before pulling out around obstacles.
Route Features
- 12 left turns, 12 right turns, 9 roundabouts, 22 sets of traffic lights.
- Key roads: Ewell Road, Upper Brighton Road, Surbiton Hill Park, Elmbridge Avenue, Beresford Avenue, Hollyfield Road, Grand Avenue.
- 4 stop signs, 2 give way junctions, 3 school zones, 2 pedestrian crossings.
- Predominantly 20 mph residential driving. No 40 mph sections. Brief 50 mph segment on the bypass.
Test Manoeuvres
- Pull up on the left near Ewell Road. Check mirrors, signal left, stop close to the kerb, then rejoin traffic safely.
Key Tips
- Nine roundabouts is exceptional. Master the three-step process: mirror check on approach, give way to the right, signal left on exit. Consistency is key.
- With no 40 mph sections and only brief 50 mph stretches, this route tests low-speed control and observation rather than speed management.
- The 9 roundabouts mean you are constantly changing direction. Stay calm and follow the examiner’s instructions methodically.
- Surbiton residential streets have speed bumps and tight bends. Approach at an appropriate speed and avoid braking harshly over bumps.
