This 11 km route is the fastest of the West Wickham set at just 22 minutes, thanks to longer 40 mph stretches. It heads west through High Street and Wickham Road to Bridle Road, continues deep into Croydon via Upper Shirley Road and Gravel Hill into Forestdale, then returns through Kent Gate Way. It features 5 roundabouts, 20/30/40 mph roads, and only 6 turns total.

Watch Out For

Upper Shirley Road is a long 40 mph road with speed cameras and pedestrian crossings. Shirley Hills Road descends steeply into Gravel Hill where the speed drops from 40 to 30 mph. The 5 roundabouts, particularly at West Way and South Way, come in quick succession. Shirley Church Road has a tricky right-hand bend near the roundabout.

Route Features

This route covers the most ground west of the test centre. Shirley Way passes through a wooded area with dappled light that can affect visibility. The Forestdale section around Kent Gate Way is a modern estate with wide roads and clear sightlines. The return via Addington Road and Woodland Way brings you through quieter residential roads back to the centre.

Key Tips

Practise the pull up on the left near Rose Walk before heading out. On the 40 mph roads, maintain speed confidently but be ready to brake for crossings. At Gravel Hill, use engine braking on the descent. The 5 roundabouts test your ability to read road markings quickly, so approach each one looking for lane guidance painted on the road.
