This 14.9 km route heads south from Loughton through Traps Hill and Spareleaze Hill towards Valley Hill in Buckhurst Hill. It then turns east through Felstead Road before joining the Epping New Road southbound. The return takes the scenic forest route via Golding's Hill and Lower Road back to the centre.
Watch Out For
The roundabout at the Epping New Road junction has fast-flowing traffic from the A104. Spareleaze Hill is a steep, winding descent where speed builds quickly. On Loughton Way the road narrows near the railway bridge. The 40 mph Golding's Hill through Epping Forest has dappled light that can hide oncoming vehicles.
Route Features
This route covers southern Loughton and Buckhurst Hill with a mix of residential 30 mph streets and the 40 mph Epping New Road. Brook Road and Alderton Hill are quiet but have sharp turns. Palmerston Road in Buckhurst Hill is a long straight residential road. The A104 Epping New Road section passes through dense woodland with good road markings.
Key Tips
Use engine braking on the steep Spareleaze Hill descent. At Loughton Way, watch for the height restriction sign near the bridge. On the return via Lower Road, keep to 30 mph as it becomes residential quickly. The pull up on the left is likely near York Hill at the start of the route.
