Sale (Manchester) #538 Pro
This is the most complex Sale route at 25.33 km, taking you through Sale Moor to the M60 motorway at 70 mph, then south via Princess Parkway and Sharston Link to Kingsway. It continues north through Didsbury along Wilmslow Road and Barlow Moor Road, returning via Chester Road through Stretford. With 31 traffic signals, 6 roundabouts, and 70 mph motorway driving, this is the longest and most signal-heavy Sale route.
Watch Out For
The M60 junction roundabouts carry fast-moving traffic merging with motorway-bound vehicles. Wilmslow Road through Didsbury is a busy high street with parked cars, buses, and pedestrians crossing unpredictably. A pedestrian crossing near Stretford and school zone require alertness. Multiple bike lanes and speed limit changes near Sale add complexity.
Route Features
Speeds range from 20 mph in residential streets to 70 mph on the M60. Barlow Moor Road through Didsbury and Chorlton is a long, straight arterial road with frequent stops. Chester Road in Stretford is a dual carriageway with bus lanes. The 31 traffic signals are the highest count on any Sale route, testing your patience and clutch control.
Test Manoeuvres
You will be asked to pull up on the left near Poplar Grove. Signal, check mirrors, and stop safely by the kerb.
Key Tips
Stamina is crucial on this 50-minute route. Stay mentally fresh by using quieter sections to recover. The M60 section requires confidence. Didsbury's Wilmslow Road is where many learners feel overwhelmed by traffic. Practise this section separately. The 31 traffic lights mean excellent clutch and brake control is essential.
