Nottingham (Chilwell) #689 Free
A 7.1-mile, 26-minute route through Beeston, Lenton Abbey, Bramcote, and Chilwell. Entirely 30 and 40 mph roads with no dual carriageway sections, making it the most urban-focused route in this group. With 9 school zones, 17 traffic signals, and only 1 roundabout, this route tests residential driving skills and hazard awareness near schools more than any other from Chilwell.
Watch Out For
- University Boulevard, Lenton Abbey. A 40 mph road near the University of Nottingham. Expect cyclists and students crossing at all times. Reduce speed near pedestrian crossings.
- Woodside Road. A winding residential road connecting to Bramcote. Parked cars on both sides and limited forward visibility on bends. Use the MSM routine continuously.
- Cow Lane, Bramcote. A narrow lane with blind bends and no pavements. Oncoming vehicles may appear suddenly. Slow down and be prepared to stop.
- Town Street, Bramcote. Village road with parked cars creating pinch points. Give way to oncoming traffic at narrow sections and use passing places.
- High Road, Chilwell. Busy commercial road with 9 school zones in the wider area. Watch for the 20 mph advisory signs during school hours.
Route Features
- Only 1 roundabout but 17 traffic signals
- 9 school zones, the most of any route at this centre alongside Route 692
- No dual carriageway, maximum 40 mph on University Boulevard
- 13 total turns (8 left, 5 right) through residential streets
Test Manoeuvres
- Pull up on the left near Eldon Road. Choose a spot away from school zones or junctions. Check mirrors and signal before stopping.
Key Tips
- Nine school zones make this route high-risk during term time. Practise identifying the flashing amber signs and reacting promptly.
- Cow Lane and Town Street in Bramcote are narrow and rural in character. Treat them as country lanes despite being in a suburb.
- University Boulevard has a wide, inviting feel but is only 40 mph. Do not exceed the limit just because the road looks fast.
