Nottingham (Chilwell) #698 Pro
This 7.2-mile, 22-minute route heads west from Chilwell through Toton and Stapleford, then continues via Brian Clough Way and Sandiacre before returning through Long Eaton. It features the widest speed range of any Chilwell route: 20, 30, 40, 60, and 70 mph, including a stretch of the A52 Brian Clough Way at national speed limit. With 4 roundabouts and 11 signals, it offers a balanced mix. Similar to Route 687 in speed variety but takes a slightly longer loop via Sandiacre.
Watch Out For
- Brian Clough Way (A52). Dual carriageway with 60-70 mph limits. Merge confidently, check mirrors thoroughly, and maintain lane discipline. The speed change from 30 mph residential to national speed limit happens quickly.
- Longmoor Road, Sandiacre. Residential road with speed bumps and parked cars. Reduce speed and watch for children near the play areas.
- Briar Gate, Long Eaton. Narrow residential street where you may need to give way to oncoming vehicles between parked cars.
- Swiney Way junction. Right-angle turn from Nottingham Road. The turn is sharper than it looks; slow down before committing.
- Pedestrian crossing near Swiney Way. Positioned just after a bend, making it easy to spot late. Approach with caution.
Route Features
- Five different speed limits (20, 30, 40, 60, 70 mph) in one route
- Dual carriageway section on Brian Clough Way
- Quiet residential streets in Sandiacre and Long Eaton
- Mix of roundabouts and signal-controlled junctions
Test Manoeuvres
- Pull up on the left near the test centre on Eldon Road
Key Tips
- Practise merging onto the A52 from the slip road - build speed on the slip and match traffic flow
- When leaving the dual carriageway, check your speedometer as 30 mph feels very slow after 70
- The 20 mph zones in Stapleford are enforced - watch for the signs when entering residential areas
