Nottingham (Chilwell) #705 Free
This 11.5-mile, 30-minute route is one of the longer Chilwell routes, heading northeast through Lenton Abbey and Bramcote Hills before taking the A52 Derby Road west to Brian Clough Way and looping back via Sandiacre Interchange and Stapleford. Speeds vary widely: 30 mph in residential areas, 40 mph on suburban roads, and 60-70 mph on both the A52 and Brian Clough Way. With 32 signals, 9 school zones, and 17 Speed-40 waypoints, it combines higher-speed dual carriageway sections with dense suburban hazards. Effectively merges the challenges of Routes 697 (urban Beeston) and 700 (A52 dual carriageway) into one longer test.
Watch Out For
- University Boulevard area. Near the University of Nottingham campus. Cyclists and pedestrians are frequent, especially during term time. Watch the bus lanes.
- Derby Road (A52) near Bramcote. Fast dual carriageway section. Lane changes require thorough mirror checks as traffic moves at 60-70 mph.
- Brian Clough Way southbound from Derby Road. The transition from A52 to Brian Clough Way involves a large roundabout. Lane discipline and early signalling are essential.
- Coniston Road, Bramcote Hills. Narrow residential road with parked cars. A 20 mph feel despite the 30 mph limit. Watch for vehicles reversing out of driveways.
- Give way near Woodside Road. Limited visibility at this junction due to trees and fencing. Creep forward and check carefully.
