Salisbury #736 Free
The shortest Salisbury route at just 8.9 km and 22 minutes, but packed with 9 roundabouts and 22 sets of traffic lights, both the highest counts among all 16 Salisbury routes. It heads south through the city centre to Downton Road and Odstock Road in Bishopdown, returning via Churchill Way East and Churchill Way North. Speed stays within 20-40 mph. Despite the short distance, the density of junctions makes this a demanding route.
Watch Out For
- School zones near Exeter Street. Three school zones in the Harnham area. 20 mph when active. They come in quick succession heading south.
- Churchill Way roundabouts. The route uses the Churchill Way ring road which has multiple roundabouts. Lane discipline and signalling at each one are essential.
- Rowbarrow residential area. Narrow streets with limited visibility. Watch for vehicles pulling out from driveways and parked cars reducing road width.
- Give way junctions near Rampart Road. Five give way points along the route. The ones near the city centre can be busy.
Route Features
- 5 left turns and 12 right turns. Strongly right-turn biased.
- 9 roundabouts (tied with Route 730 for most in Salisbury), 22 traffic lights (the most of any Salisbury route), and 5 give way junctions.
- Speed limits: 20 mph in school zones, 30 mph residential, and 40 mph on Churchill Way South. No sections above 40 mph.
Test Manoeuvres
- Pull up on the left near the test centre.
Key Tips
- With 22 traffic lights, you will face multiple signal changes. Approach amber lights with caution. Do not speed up to beat a light, but avoid stopping unnecessarily if you can safely proceed.
- The 9 roundabouts require consistent technique. For each one: check mirrors, signal on approach, give way to the right, and signal left when exiting.
