Porirua #844 Free
A compact, single-stage route from VTNZ Porirua covering 9.98 km in about 20 minutes. This shorter loop heads north along Titahi Bay Road to the Pohutukawa Grove area of Titahi Bay, then returns south through Elsdon before looping back to the centre. With 6 roundabouts, 5 traffic signals, and speeds split between 50 and 70 km/h, this is a straightforward but well-rounded test. Compared to Route #843 (22.55 km), this stays closer to the office and has no highway section.
Watch Out For
- 6 roundabouts along the loop. Give way to traffic from your right. Signal left to exit, and indicate before entering if turning left or right.
- 70 km/h zone on Titahi Bay Road. The limit changes between 50 and 70 as you pass through Takapuwahia. Watch for the posted signs and adjust promptly.
- Narrow residential streets off Te Pene Avenue. Opapa Street and Pohutukawa Grove are quiet cul-de-sac style streets with parked cars on both sides. Keep left and slow down.
- Prosser Street and Mohuia Crescent in Elsdon. These residential streets have limited visibility at intersections. Approach give way lines slowly and check both directions.
Route Features
- Covers 4 suburbs: Porirua City Centre, Takapuwahia, Titahi Bay, and Elsdon.
- Speed limits: 50 km/h (55%) and 70 km/h (45%). No highway section.
- 8 total turns (4 left, 4 right) plus 6 roundabouts.
- Entirely suburban roads with a mix of arterials and residential streets.
Test Manoeuvres
- Pull over near Tutuira Place. This is close to the test centre. Signal, check mirrors, pull over smoothly, then rejoin traffic when safe.
Key Tips
- Titahi Bay Road is the spine of this route. You will travel it northbound and southbound, so get comfortable with the speed changes and roundabout entries along it.
- The Elsdon loop via Prosser Street and Mohuia Crescent tests your residential driving. Keep speed at 50, scan for pedestrians, and signal at every turn.
- With only 20 minutes of driving, mistakes are costly. Focus on clean observation habits from the start.
