Hendon (London) #869 Free
A 10.1 km (6.3 miles) route from the Hendon DVSA Test Centre, taking about 22 minutes through Grahame Park and Mill Hill. Very similar to Route #867, this route follows the same Grahame Park Way to Flower Lane to Mill Hill loop via Wise Lane, Milespit Hill, and Oakhampton Road, but with 6 left turns instead of 5. Like Route #867, it has zero traffic lights and 2 roundabouts, making junction awareness the central skill tested.
Watch Out For
- Milespit Hill descent. Steep downhill with a curve at the bottom. Use second gear to control speed on the way down. Braking too late into the bend is a common serious fault.
- Oakhampton Road. Long, straight residential street where it is tempting to exceed 30 mph. Speed cameras are present. Keep your speed steady.
- Heritage Avenue / Grahame Park Way junction. Complex junction at the start of the route. Lane markings can be confusing. Follow the correct lane for your intended direction.
Route Features
- 6 left turns and 2 right turns through quiet Mill Hill residential streets
- 2 roundabouts and zero traffic lights, identical to the parallel Route #867
- Entirely 30 mph residential roads with 20 mph advisory zones on Wise Lane and Milespit Hill
- Key roads: Grahame Park Way, Flower Lane, Bunn's Lane, Page Street, Wise Lane, Milespit Hill, Devonshire Road, Oakhampton Road, Pursley Road
Test Manoeuvres
- Pull up on the left near Heritage Avenue. Mirrors, signal, and careful kerb positioning.
Key Tips
- Practise this route alongside Route #867 as they share most of the same roads. Familiarity with the Mill Hill loop will build confidence for either variation.
- On Devonshire Road, the road surface can be uneven. Maintain a steady 25-30 mph and watch for potholes that could cause you to swerve.
- The zero traffic lights mean you set your own pace at every junction. Take your time at each give way, the examiner prefers a safe, methodical approach over speed.
